Monteverdi - Madrigali guerrieri et amorosi, libro ottavo Les Arts florissants, Paul Agnew. The emotional conflict between lovers is the dominant theme of Monteverdi’s Fifth Book of Madrigals, a theme which the composer explores through an atmospherically related sequence of pieces, many on texts taken from Guarini’s pastoral epic Il pastor i, a well-known figure at the Gonzaga court in Mantua where Monteverdi was then employed, had written this piece .

Claudio Monteverdi: Cruda Amarilli (5th madrigal book). The Sixth Book goes on to be perhaps Monteverdi's most intimately emotional. A new invigoration of various novel texts was achieved by a combination of dramatic recitation and choral declamation. Yet he does turn toward older material at times: he sets two Petrarch sonnets (items #5 & #14) in dramatically modern style, two of only four Petrarch.

Prefaced with a Sinfonia by Biagio Marini and featuring one of Monteverdi’s towering masterpieces, Zefiro torna, the Ninth Book comprises the few remaining late madrigals, a number of canzonette, as well as works with the same titles and verses from the earlier Eighth Book, here performed in completely different musical settings. If you have any fondness for Monteverdi or madrigals in general, you will quickly find this is a fantastic treasure. The musicological reconstructions are convincing. The sense of deployment of accompaniment is perfect.

The singing is superb. There are fewer "top 40" type pieces here than in, say, Monteverdi's Sixth Book, 5/5(3).
