Explores the interplay of syntactic variation and genre. This title contains articles that include both overviews of theoretical approaches to the concept of genre in linguistics and data-based analyses of specific syntactic phenomena in English, German, and Romance. The book gives fresh attention to the dialects, arguing that they offer an unprecedented degree of variation (not found, for example, in Germanic languages). Analysing a host of new data, the authors show how the dialects can be used as a test-bed for investigating and challenging received ideas about language structure and change.

The book takes the concept of genre as a reference-point for the description and analysis of morpho-syntactic variation and change. It includes both overviews of theoretical approaches to the concept of genre and text type in linguistics and studies of specific syntactic phenomena in English, German, and selected Romance languages. Such agreement variation as that illustrated in Table is among the most widespread type of variation across varieties of English (Kortmann, ) and is considered socially diagnostic, with Author: Bernd Kortmann.

The main objections to syntactic reconstruction raised in the literature are assessed, and it is argued that the reconstruction of syntax is Author: George Walkden.

Syntactic variation deals with the ways in which sentences are structured and constructed. These maps show how UK speakers rate the following non-standard sentences. This chapter looks at the frequency of coordinate clauses, because-clauses, passive voice, and dislocated syntax (e.g., clefting and left dislocation).

There are some age and gender differences but few social class differences. The two social class differences that are statistically significant are passive voice, which the middle-class speakers use more frequently than the working-class.
